SCAPULA ( shoulder blade)

This piece continues the SILVA – “the Forest” series, where I place the two last entries in this blog. It also starts the cycle of “remnants”, as they will be made with pieces of material left behind after cutting or trimming.

SCAPULA ( shoulder blades ) is the assemblage of such two pieces of wood mended together with steel wire ( 14″ x 11″ ).

Stylistically, the method is the same: a recognizable depiction and an ideographic monochromatic counterpart.

TOOTH AND NAIL . oil, casein and sign paint on wood panels and acrylic sheets ( aprox. 24″ x 35″ without base )

… ” floating ” wood panels between acrylic sheets which can be rotated and viewed in random configurations. There is the symmetry of the images on the painted wood and there is the randomness of  the marks on the acrylic, ( derived from the letters of the title ) superimposed on the monochromatic back side. In fact, both surfaces of the panels are “written”.

I am more and more aware of the fact that a painted image is a painted object with depth and weight: an ARTIFACT with a physical presence, unlike the traditional rectangular window of painting. which makes the canvas disappear. <… displayed museum-like, as a collection of found fragments behind panes of glass or in labeled drawers>.

The rounded panels became a recurrent device in order to tame the aggressive void of the corners, that Bermuda Triangle of the eye.

The source of these images is the idiom in the title. The subject is placed in the midst of nature, where it belongs, with the connotation of human frailty and the artifice of fashion. ( Yes, that IS a red manicured nail. )
