Postcards From a Vanished Town.

An imaginary walk through the streets of childhood ( Galați, the Romanian Danube harbor ).  A vanished world, a vanished age, a vanished self.

  1. Viorel Popescu takes us again on an initiatic stroll into his painterly universe.
This time it is a journey through “le temps perdu”. Like all true artists, allowing memory to be a painter and a writer, he describes the vanished world of his childhood in idiosyncratic details, and unexpected, startling configurations, thus reinventing the world of his childhood.
These astounding images have the quality of dreams, of faraway memories of a faraway world. Up is down, past is present, memory is a labyrinth… This world has not vanished, as long as the artist can conjure it, metamorphosed through his alchemical filter.

I find these images both haunting and beguiling. They stay with you and demand revisiting, same as memory does.
